Unsanitized UofT: an introduction letter

Dear kind readers,

We are Unsanitized UofT. Our platform represents the manifestation of a community’s need for education and peaceful dialogue surrounding racial injustice against BIPOC and marginalized groups. Galvanized by the Black Lives Matter movement, Unsanitized seeks to provide an outlet for students at UofT to voice their unexpurgated truth and educate one another on the various forms of discrimination that plague society.

Named with the hope that students will freely share their raw and “unsanitized” stories, our group is a safe place for people of all ethnicities, gender identities, sexualities, religious backgrounds and origins. Unsanitized is a place to embrace discomfort, to confront our shared moral deficiencies, and to mourn the crimes of oppression as a community that believes in a kinder world.

In the face of injustice, the revolutionary spirit implores us to “make noise” and “get loud.” Although we can raise our voices, let us also be allies who listen twice as much as we speak and amplify voices of wisdom that whisper among the chaos. Born of the conviction that education is freedom, Unsanitized invites students to share their stories, art, poetry, and prose about their encounters with racial persecution so that we, as a community, may learn from the testimonies of our friends. Please find us at @unsanitized_uoft on Instagram and submit work at [email protected].

With hurting hearts and open minds, Unsanitized believes in the power of intentionality and solidarity to heal a hurting society. The arc of the moral universe is long, and it begins within ourselves.

With hope,

Kate & Tessa
