ROM Friday Night Live: An Innovative Night at the Museum

The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), conveniently located across the street from Victoria College, is one of the best parts about being a student at the University of Toronto. Aside from free general entry for all students on Tuesdays, the ROM consistently makes an effort to welcome us by offering many exciting opportunities, such as gallery openings, talks, and special events.

As a frequent patron of the ROM, I was thrilled to learn about Friday Night Live—a weekly event taking place every Friday from 7pm to 12am, September 30th to November 25th.

After hours, the ROM becomes a whole new world. Each Friday night presents a different concept—ranging from an evening dedicated to the beauty of nature, called “Wild,” and a Halloween celebration called “Goosebumps.” These electrifying themes transform the museum halls. Special exhibits are put on display, artists and curators provide insight on their work, and guests are granted access to regular exhibits. Further, the ROM provides live entertainment, DJs, a dance floor, and delicious food and drink stands.

On Friday, October 21st, I attended FNLROM: Fashion—a celebration of the world of fashion. I was immediately drawn in by the bright colours, loud prints, and unique styles. On the ground floor, the organizers from African Fashion Week Toronto—called The Fashion Ready Foundation—showcased beautiful and creative pieces of clothing, crafted by the winning student designers from the past four years. I was amazed to learn that these breathtaking collections were produced by fashion designers not much older than myself. Other collections on display included the stunning White Cashmere Collection 2016, a line created with Cashmere bathroom tissue, presented by the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, and a presentation of the fascinating evolution of hair design, along with current styles, presented by Toronto-based hair salon Taz Hair Co.

An array of talented musicians was spread throughout the venue, including a variety of DJs, musicians, and a very special performance from the UofT Faculty of Music’s Jazz Program.

One of my favourite parts about this event is the ROM Bucks system. For six dollars, you can buy either a food or a drink ticket, which you can later exchange at any of the vendors or bars on each floor. This provides guests with the opportunity to try a variety of gourmet foods—including gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options. For those who are feeling adventurous, I encourage you to try the Wild Boar and Venison Nachos, or the Ostrich Sliders served at Rachel’s Gourmet Gone Wild—don’t be intimidated by the unusual selection of meats, both were delicious!

Once again, the ROM has outdone itself as they prove to be both great hosts and fabulous entertainers. Friday Night Live is more than just another special exhibition at the museum—it’s a social opportunity for students to get together and celebrate arts and culture.

There are four #FNLROM themes left this season:

Nov 4: Country
Nov 11: Tribute
Nov 18: Wild
Nov 25: Afterglow

More information can be found under the What’s On tab on the ROM’s website. You must be 19 or older to attend this event.
