Late fall songs for intimate moments
Even though Halloween is over, I’m still psychic, and I’ll keep listening to haunted music for the rest of the year. This playlist reflects the small moments that signal change.
In “Clueless,” The Marias ask, “Have you ever been emotional?” in an exploration of intimacy and anger. Yeek’s “Solstice” reflects our “whole cold season” in its smooth mix of alternative, hip-hop, and R&B styles. The lyrics of “BB Song” speak to missing a person who has disappeared, with Blonder saying, “We woke up from our dream / We woke up when we stopped believing.” This longing is reflected in their deep and soulful sound.
I’m obsessed with Mitski’s new album, like the rest of the world, but “A Pearl” particularly reflects her lyrical mastery, with lines like “It’s just that I fell in love with a war / And nobody told me it ended,” while also exploring the ways that toxic relationships can turn into comfortable identities. Using a different approach, Princess Nokia starts “For the Night” with “Smash my heart in pieces / it looks so good on the floor.” These lyrics are placed on top of an upbeat, pop-y beat that calms down as the song goes on.
The playlist finishes with “Feelings Change” by Yaeji, one of my newest musical obsessions, who mixes soft vocals against electronic hip- hop sounds. “Feelings Change” begins with “Speaking like breathing, it’s easy / To say I haven’t changed” and ends with “I have missed / All my chances to be so honest.” The ways these artists grapple with what change, emotion, and self-reflection mean emulates my feelings about the intangibility of changing seasons and intimate emotional movements.
