Past, present, future

On February 29, 1956, the masthead of The Strand outlined their intent for the coming academic year as follows:

“First of all, The Strand is written for the Vic student. It is the wish of myself and the staff to make this paper as interesting as possible. Our aim is to make The Strand the news hub for Vic student activity… The more people writing for this paper, the greater is the cross-section of this part of the campus.”

Despite the fact that these words were written more than sixty years ago, our vision for The Strand remains the same. We’d like to both represent and engage critically with our community in every way possible.

At a time like this, the aforementioned “cross-section” is vital to our ability to reach others across this void of isolation and distancing. The melding of various intersections and communities is what allows usto create art that makes a difference in the world. Our last issue was about comfort, and although that was just a theme, we want to carry the sentiment over into the rest of the academic year and beyond.

While the issues our community faces certainly change from year to year, our goal remains the same, and, as the past 62 volumes have done, we have to work with what we’ve been given. Though we can’t print our issues for the time being, we hope that you have been enjoying them online. Look forward to more digital content. We’ll try our best to make it as engaging as possible.

Our fall magazine, centered around the theme “Explore,” gives our writers a chance to express themselves through personal essays, poetry, short fiction, photos, illustrations, and now, videos. It will be hosted entirely online on a new website currently in development. If you’ve ever thought about creating for The Strand, we’d love to hear from you.
