The Strand: Mental Wellness Commissioner is a relatively new position within VUSAC. What do you think your role and responsibilities are?
I think that my main role will be raising awareness about mental heath.
Have you been involved in student politics before? What draws you to the Mental Wellness Commission?
I never had time to run for a position at VUSAC. Mental Health is a special area of interest of mine. A lot of students face mental illness challenges due to schoolwork, the pressure of doing well, worrying about career prospects after graduation, personal problems and so on. I think this is an important position to have, since I could create an environment where there would be enough opportunities to talk and ask questions concerning mental health.
What will be the main focus(es) of your tenure?
As I mentioned before, I will focus on raising awareness. Also, exam jams and animal therapy sessions furing exam seasons are on my list.
The broader purpose of the Mental Wellness Commissioner is to advocate for programs relating to mental health and reducing stigma around mental illness. What are some specific changes you would like to make which would improve this mandate?
One thing I want to focus on is encouraging Vic students to speak about their mental health challenges. Another important thing is helping students with using the services. of the mental wellness centre
Do you see any potential challenges in your role and how would you address them?
Some students may not feel comfortable about talking about their problems. I think one on one discussion environment would help them.
