Lulu Karra on running for Equity Commissioner

What position are you running for, and what are the responsibilities of this position?

My mandate as an equity commissioner is to represent students’ equity-based concerns at the college, advise the council and student organizations on inclusivity and accessibility, coordinate equity training to council and executives of clubs and levies, facilitate educational programming, services and events. My overall aim to ensure every Vic student feels at home!

Can you summarize the key points of your platform?

Victoria college equity commission endeavors to create a positive and inclusive space for all students. Members of the commission work hand in hand to organize events, fundraisers and initiatives that make Vic a more equitable and accessible space for its students.

Why do you want to run for this position, and what makes you best suited to fill this position?

Our paths, motivations, abilities and talents are different from each other, as much as we all identify as Vic students. Being in an environment that recognizes diversity and one that strives to meet the needs of everyone, accordingly, is what I stand for. I stand for equity amongst us. I stand for fairness; fairness, where we all get what we need, regardless of our differences. My aim therefore is to continue promoting a Vic where students are comfortable sharing their experiences, concerns and motivations. A Vic where we all feel included, respected, and appreciated. Everyone’s voice matters.

What goals do you hope to accomplish if you are elected to this position?

I am looking forward to working hand in hand with other organizations at Vic to promote inclusivity of all the students from diverse backgrounds, mostly through initiatives and events. Through my interaction with fellow students and involvement with different clubs, I can ascertain that events are a handy way of engaging students. Equity is achieved when all of us in the community are involved. Equity is achieved when we become aware of our surroundings, when we celebrate our differences, when we learn more about ourselves, our beliefs and when

we receive support from the community. Once given the platform, my aim is to ensure students are involved, are aware of their surroundings and what to expect.
