What position are you running for, and what are the responsibilities of this position?
I am running for Sustainability Commissioner. This position represents student voices on issues relating to consumption, climate change, and the campus landscape. One of its responsibilities is to collaborate with students and clubs to promote sustainability on campus and within VUSAC.
Can you summarize the key points of your platform?
Reduce Campus Consumption
Increase Student Engagement
Promote Green Initiatives Within Clubs
Collaborate With the Administration to Prioritize Sustainability
Why do you want to run for this position, and what makes you best suited to fill this position?
I believe I can mobilize the student body to be as interested in sustainability as I am. I am confident that I have the experience on sustainability issues through my involvement with the commission in implementing green projects to improve and educate ourselves and others. I want to continue the work I have done with the commission. As an advocate for climate justice, I am motivated to take on a role where I can put my passion into action.
What goals do you hope to accomplish if you are elected to this position?
I want Vic to reduce its consumption through energy efficiency measures, waste reduction, and reusability campaigns. I want to increase student engagement and awareness by stressing the effectiveness of their efforts towards the pressing issue of climate change. As commissioner, I will work with more groups on campus because climate change is an intersectional and holistic problem that needs to be addressed in coordinated ways. Most importantly, I will make sustainability a dominant issue and a necessary lens concerning further development on campus.
